Another tool I have begun using is the The Pomodoro Technique®. This basic tool suggests you use short periods of time to do your work. The idea is to set a timer for 25 minutes and work diligently on the task at hand without any interruptions from your phone, Facebook or any of those other distractions. At the end of the 25 minutes you can begin a new 25 minute period, take a five minute break or you may have decided that was enough. I find when the timer is set I am much more focused and working more efficiently trying to get as much done in each session as I can. There is the Pomodoro App that will help you to be organized with your pomodoro's but personally I end up spending too much time managing the app and prefer to just set the timer and work away! Doing 4
I seem to have difficulty staying organized and focused on all the different tasks I want to accomplish each day. As a result I end up puttering around and get distracted by lots of things including Words with Friends, Facebook, talking to friends on the phone or plannning a trip of some sort! Lately I have many exciting things coming up in my life that have lots of details that require my attention so I have begun using my reminders app on my phone. That helps me remember all those little details and projects I am working on and the best part is checking things off so they disappear off the list. How wonderful and rewarding it is to check things off the list and feel as though I am accomplishing these tasks!

Doing 4 I know when I have a project looming and it feels overwhelming and challenging working on it 20 minutes at a time makes it feel a lot more manageable. Plus if I just chip away at a big project a little bit each day it will be done with greater ease than trying to plow through it all at once with dread. Do you have a project that feels too big to even start? Do you find yourself distracted by all those life things? Get ready to try new technique, become more efficient and productive and as a result feel better about yourself! Give it a try and see what happens!

Helen, I have such a problem managing my time! I get distracted so easily with similar things that you do. I just hate it when the day gets away from me. I used to use an egg timer to try to keep me focused. That was long before smartphones and tablets. Now we carry these distracting devices every were we go! I need to find that egg timer....or just buy a new one. Thanks for this reminder about time management.

Sometimes I even set a timer for doing the distraction stuff so I allow those things but set limits for myself. I use the timer on my phone then I always have it whether I am in my office or at home!

I thought I was the only one who did this! And then at the end of my weekend I get so down on myself for not getting anything done. As I was reading the blog I was thinking of my kitchen timer (so I could hear the ticking) to help keep me focused. I know I'd spend too much time fussing with the app! I will try this, thanks Helen. Hope married life is treating you well~ Comments are closed.
