The other day I was thinking about the food I was eating and how much better I felt when I made the shift to nutrient dense whole foods. I have had a winter of ups and downs with my food, eating loads of processed foods especially the sugary foods and lots of bread. My clothes got tighter and tighter and I was feeling crummy and depressed most of the time. I know that eating the sugar always lowers my mood and puts me in a depressive spin but many times the craving over rides any of those smart, thoughtful choices. So for now I am on an upswing and sticking pretty closely to my vegan food choices and feeling so much better!
What occured to me is that the nutrient dense whole foods: veggies, fruit, legumes, seeds, nuts, grains, come from the earth are a product of Spirit (or Source, God, Higher Power whatever you choose to call it). No matter what we do to the seeds we can not make them grow without the energy of Spirit and it is that energy that produces the vitamins and nutrients as well. I can take a seed and then coddle it, yell at it, stomp on it or even carry it around in my pocket and it just will not grow. Now if I plant that seed in nutrient rich soil and provide it with live giving water then it will grow and mature and produce food that will nourish us completely. If the conditions are not favorable for the seed or plant to grow it will wither away and die and not be able to produce its fruit, it needs the proper nutrients of the Spirit, water and sun to grow and produce. So now I am seeing these whole plant foods as food of the Spirit or Spirit food and prefer to each these foods over anything else.
On the other hand I was looking at all the man made processed foods and began to see them as food of the ego, or food of man. It is the ego that wants us to have sugar and fats and all those addictive foods. It is the ego that wants to make as much money as possible from creating cheap foods that lead us to disease and early death. It is the ego that wants us to be fat and sick and stil wanting more of those addictive, processed foods. It is the ego that wants us to be sick so we are then supporting big medicine and big pharma. It is the ego that keeps producing these funny colored, unnatural foods that keep us from being focused at school or work. It is the ego that keeps us addicted to the high fat, high sugar processed foods that no matter how sick we keep eating it. Funny how we can judge a cigarette smoker with emphysema who continues to smoke knowing full well that they would feel better and be healthier if they stopped smoking yet we find it acceptable for the obese person to continue to eat those man made foods or the ego foods.
Now i understand that the foods we eat are all a choice, it is up to us to decide if we want to eat the life giving food of Spirit or the addictive and disease producing food of the ego. For me, for today I am choosing to eat the food of Spirit and each time I sit before a plate of the most beautiful, colorful foods I thank Spirit for the energy to produce all of these foods and I am thankful for the nutrients and nurishment I will receive from them as well. As a result I feel better, my mood is lifted and I am able to live in an improved state of gratitude and the added bonus....my pants are not as tight!
