I do love technology, I especially love my iphone and I use it all the time. I think I am pretty normal as for my phone 'habit' and often find myself checking email, responding to texts, checking Facebook or playing Words With Friends. It is amazing how much can get done in such a short time by being able to respond to emails or texts immediately. The flow of the day goes on with so many different things getting accomplished while I am doing other things as well. Multi tasking at its finest!
What I have come to realize is that I never take a moment to just relax and observe life going on around me. As soon as I am left alone or waiting for something I am on my phone. If I am asked to wait at an appointment I simply get on my phone and do the usual email, text, Facebook stuff. If I am in the car and not driving I use the time to catch up on Words or Facebook. When I am away and have been taking pictures then when I sit for a meal or get on a bus or train I begin to upload pictures to Facebook or texting to my daughters.
Whenever there is a pause in my life instead of pausing I am on my phone. Instead of taking that moment to stop and look around or relax and take a few mindful breaths I am checking my phone.
Does it sound obsessive - yes, does it sound different than most people with a phone - no, What I am realizing is that I am rarely just taking a moment, those beautiful precious moments in each day, to enjoy the moment. People watching is so interesting and entertaining but I completely miss it when I always have my face buried in my phone. Taking a moment to relax and feel gratitude for the gifts of the day becomes a rare event because I am always reaching for me phone.
So beginning today I have decided it is time to enjoy those moments, those pauses during the day to reflect and enjoy the moment. Enjoying my surroundings, spending time in quiet reflection, looking for new and interesting things, observing and stopping to listen to the quiet voice within will all make a difference in the quality of my life. Now I am looking forward to those glorious pauses and how much it will impact my life!
I encourage you to also look at your moments and notice if you are filling them up with technology or enjoying the peacefulness of each pause. Take some time today to step away from technology, even for a brief moment and enjoy your life around you! See you in the pause!
